To My ex
I Found the Box You Returned
It was in the back of the closet under winter coats. Inside were two books, a sweatshirt, a charger that was not mine, and the photograph from the lake.
I sat on the floor and looked through everything.
The strange thing is that it did not destroy me. I remembered us, but I did not want us back. The memories felt like rooms in a house I no longer live in.
I kept the books. I donated the sweatshirt. I threw away the charger. I put the photograph in an envelope instead of ripping it up.
We were not a mistake. We were simply not forever.
I hope you have become kinder to yourself. I hope I have too.
The box is empty now.
